If D goes to my DF friend to have babies then I need to get a breeding loan agreement thingy set up. Never having done anything like this before I could do with some advice on what needs covering.
Also has anyone any general advice at all on this? I really want things to go smoothly for D. The whole point of letting her go somewhere else rather than enjoying my life's dream to have a foal myself is that it looks like it would be a better place for her and I don't want anything to go wrong. I am also determined to keep this extremely supportive and good friendship! If we have everything agreed beforehand then hopefully we can all sit back and enjoy the situation.

on this page there is a link to a sample loan agreement. www.bhs.org.uk/Content/Wfr-Home.aspthing is it is very loose and you have a lot to fill in, so it could be worth taking further advice. Perhaps the BHS will be able to help further if you drop an email to them?

Has Jo Ashby got anything? This must be a fairly common situation. My only advice would be what you already know - that however good the friendship is now, it's important that any agreement is in writing and covers all eventualities.
Perhaps you could get a standard loan agreement (I think BHS has one on their website) and amend it to cover any foaling additions. Things like who pays stud fees, who owns the foal at the end, who makes decisions about the mare during the covering, the pregnancy, during the birth and post-partum. Are you signing over full responsibility for D's well-being or do you want to be consulted on major decisions - and what constitutes a major decision? Don't take it for granted that the loaner will do certain things, or behave in a certain way - she needs the security of a watertight agreement as much as you do so she knows what she can and can't do.
This is a fantastic move, Linda, and wonderful that D is going to someone you like and trust. You're making a very unselfish decision here and I'm full of admiration. xx

My agreement with Celia, Lynda is quite straight forward, its a basic loan agreement that says I have permission to breed from her and that the any offspring are to be registered in my name, a copy of this must be sent to Jo ashby for her records, that was the most important bit, Jo will help you with any other question I,m sure. The other main consideration I had was vets insurance and that we agreed would be covered by the registered owner.

When Linda told me she was thinking of sending D on a breeding loan, she said it was a DF with a small herd, and for some reason I thought it may be you, Lucy!!
Obviously Tilly is not on a breeding loan, but I have a loan agreement with Olivia, which was put together with help from dalesfans. Bascially it lists who the loaner is, and the owner, Tillys details, what I can and cannot do with her, plus notifiying Olivia if any change in her usual behaviour, and details of any problems I could have with Tilly, a list of what comes with her and its condition. Also what I am responsible for (worming, farrier, injections, vet care, etc.) plus how long the loan is for, and a time scale giving notice if I want to return her, and the fact Olivia can visit at any reasonable time, and remove Tilly if she is not happy.

Thanks everybody I've found a lot of useful stuff.
it's not set in stone yet but I'm keeping my fingers crossed! We're doing vet checks next.
Mair, I hope you are getting better, I still owe you a broller! I will try and come visiting soon if you'll have me?
What are peoples' thoughts on introducing ponies (given Isaac is a bully boy!)??
Thanks
Lucy

I think both of you are going about this sensibly, and it looks like some sound advice all ready. I agree with the others that everything should be spelled out regarding who has what responisiblities and rights. Better to go through all the boggy details than have an emergency spring up and not know where you stand. Lucydales, you might start that last question under another thread. Although with D being a dominant mare, Isaac may have finally met his match Fingers crossed this works out well for everyone!

Somewhere on my PC I have a copy of Susies loan agreement, if I can find it I could email it to you if that would be helpful.
