Bay was put down a bit ago. It has been really rough. He was a 30 year old quarter horse. He had a brillant show career and was enjoying his retirement. This year he started having problems getting air when he ran, it got hot, and so on. The day he was put to sleep the vet should have been there at 915AM but arrived after 1120AM. He was gasping for air. It was very difficult for him. Poor boy could not stand well for the shots.
I am having the worst time trying to forget when he went down, digging the grave, and so on. I felt (and feel) terrible. He was a good size horse and I hate to think I disrespected his body by moving it.
I only knew him for two years. He didn't like to be caught for fear of work. He did enjoy treats and a rub down. I really did enjoy his company. I miss seeing him but feel so much better knowing that he is not in pain or scared that he can't get air.

What an ordeal for you to see him in such distress. As you have said he is now no longer suffering. RIP Bay.

Don't blame yourself, you did everything you could for him, it is a distressing time when a horse dies but he is at peace now and you couldn't have done any more.It is difficult to get that 'image' out of our minds sometimes but you were there and you did as much as any owner can for a horse.
