Friday 25 August 2006 at 7pm at Ledston Equine Clinic, near Castleford, West Yorkshire (£10 per ticket)
Ken Faulkner (my favourite horseman, a visiting Australian) is doing a lecture demo entitled:
BRIDGING THE GAP How natural horsemanship can teach your horse self-carriage in preparation for competition training
Training techniques to teach you: - to see and feel when a horse is in self-carriage - to recognise when a horse is out of balance by its body shape, muscle tightness and emotions - to develop a repertoire of exercises on the ground and ridden, which will encourage self-carriage in your horse.
If anyone's interested, please pm me and I can pass on the contact phone number.
Ken is doing this demo while he's up at the GG Centre, Easingwold during the day teaching a 4 day clinic (Thur 24 to Sun 27 Aug).
He's the only person I've ever travelled 12,000 miles to see, and he was well worth it!

Hi Sarah - can you send me the details please. I would like to go if I can. Also are there any places left on the 4 day clinic and who do I contact. I know you send me details of his visit earlier this year, but I can't find them now. I would like to go if I can afford it. Thanks, Jill

Hi Jill,
I'll email you a poster for the clinic and demo, which include contact details. I'll be at both, with Streak....... Martha just asked me yesterday (after I started this thread!) if I'd be happy to take Streak and ride her at the demo as Ken's got a back problem at the mo, and Martha has a broken hip and wrist...... but it'll be Ken doing all the talking and explaining what he'd do and why.
A couple of other Dalesfans are going on the clinic for the first day or two with ponies, and you'll also know Hilary and Annette from the clicker training. Worth ringing and checking if you can still get a place - I'm going to camp over there and pen Streak at the GG for the duration of the clinic.

Hi Sarah - thanks for sending the info. I have consulted the diary but I just can't see how I can do it - perhaps next year, if he comes over again. One of the biggest problems ( ) is that this is the last year for my sons as students. The younger one has a job to start teaching in September. In the meantime of course, he has no money and no home so he will be here with me for most of August and we will have to make trips to London over the period of the Ken clinic/demo to arrange accommodation for him for September. Guess who will (temporarily at least) have to stump up for the deposit? ? See you next week, anyway. REally looking forward to it after seeing Bow jump with Nic yesterday. Jill

Never mind, Jill, maybe another time. Hope you and your son get everything sorted for his move to London.
Did I mention Ken's also doing a clinic in North Wales - Fri 18 Aug to Tue 22 Aug. I'll probably aim to go and watch the weekend days of that. It's just a bit further away than Ruthin (the name of the place escapes me at the moment!). If you fancied meeting up to share the journey across, I'll be going A59, and then the motorway from nowhere to join the M6 etc, so we could always meet somehwere on route if you had a day spare.
Anyway, look forward to seeing you and Bow soon.

Great idea Sarah - I have a day free on 19th August if you are going across. Let me know. My son might have to come with us tho' On the Sunday (20th) I am being very brave and entering a dressage comp at Broomhill - at least on paper. I may well duck out from nerves before then - who knows? Especially as I do not have the test yet and so haven't managed to work on it at all. See you next week. Jill

Jill,
slight spanner in the works here. The organiser is thinking of trying to arrange a demo there on the Saturday night..... but nothing has been arranged yet. They are only a couple of miles from Denbigh. If they DO do a demo, I'd be really tempted to stay overnight (ponysitter allowing) and watch 2 days of the clinic plus the demo. So it may or may not be on to share transport after all.
Good luck with the dressage. No excuses. I've got a full set of tests here, so you can learn your test off by heart when you and Bow come over here!!!!! Streak and I should have done our first dressage test 2 weeks before then, so if we haven't chickened out, then neither should you!! LOL.

I will have to check what I am doing - that is close to me. What is happening at the clinic and can spectators go?

Had another word with the host at Denbigh, and there definitely isn't a demo there now. Just the clinic during the daytime.
The poster for the clinic includes the following:
"Getting The Foundations Right … and much more! Understand the rein aids for your groundwork skills. See the groundwork and ridden work explained from the basics to advanced levels. Learn to play with your horse in a way that develops your horse’s balance, cadence and flexion."
Ken's usual format is to focus on groundwork for the first couple of days, and then progress to riding on days 3 and 4 once the softness, communication and willingness have been well established on the ground. There'll be quite a range of horses/ponies and riders there including (I believe) a recently started youngster, as well as more experienced horses. Ken uses a p.a. system so everyone can hear very clearly wherever you are standing/sitting around the arena, and he's very good at explaining what to do and why, as well as answering questions throughout the day from riders and those watching. It's £20 a day for spectators.
