At the college south of Crew (cannot Spell) today watched Claire judge the Veteran Horsey society classes. 99% super animals. right in coats and movement. only one not right in coat and one not right in movement. I sat talking to one competitor who had bought her new pony (20's daughter riding) onlylast week.!!!!! He was for her and was 17 yrs old moving well for his age. He was there so as she could now semi retire her 33 yr old pony! Daughter had come down from scotland for the weekend and as the ex owners said this pony had done some dressage they had brought him to the college yesterday and he came 5th in the novice and won the prelim! the best class was the oldies in hand. there were two thourobred types in it and both moved very very well neither of their handlers could keep up with them ..... I did try to laugh carefully but they were brilliant in looks and movement. Sat looking before the classes at the score sheets. 20 marks for walk 20 marks for trot 20 marks for condition. etc etc for lots of other things. the sad thing was that if you were not a member of the veteran horse soc. you did not realize the rules or the marking system. So people were at the ringside wondering the whys and so on. just expecting the class to be a normal show class. but what the judge liked as an animal had nothing to do with the result ;D The show was very well organized, food was 100% stewards great. But god am I burnt and hot still ....must get a hat. Valerie.,

Great stuff Val, I think these oldies classes are wonderful. If I had more energy and timeI'd do more with my 2 oldies but it is then"oldie owner" who is holding them back!

It's great to see these horses and ponies carrying on fit and well into old age. If Dan hadn't done his leg in I would definitely be entering him for veteran classes (and he is a relative youngster at only 19 ). If I'd managed to get some weight off him!! ;D

Tilly is a veteran now and we entered a qualifier, she was in the pre-veteran 15-19 so some really fabulous horses.
As well as judging on condition etc they look at turnout and whether the horse wants to be in the class.
Tilly did OK except the judge commented that Lou's bun was a mess, I'll never make a haridresser.

seuw the judges are encouraged to give marks to a horse/pony that looks 'alive/happy/interested etc. so if a horse is excited/bit naughty it would get only 5 out of 10 for manners but get10/10 for presence/enjoyment
I do wish method of the judging could be in with schedule so people know what is being judged. In reality the best 'show' has nothing to do with placings and the judge does not know who has won untill the marks are added up! I think there were 8 or so lots of marks to ad up for each animal in the classes! Valerie.
