I had a good look at the how to do tail ribbons guide and have practised it on Holly and bought some red white and blue ribbons. However I am a bit nervous about doing it for a show. I live in the deep south of the country and Holly will be the only Dales in any class guaranteed. I would like to use them as they are traditional but I suspect I will be told it is incorrect. Have any others any experience of this kind of thing down this way? I'm even thinking of printing something off to justify i just in case and keeping it in my pocket, but that would probably really get a judges back up! The trouble is though it's all new forests and welsh cobs around here and I want to distinguish Holly as a dales. She has been judged as a Welsh Cob before and I had to put the judge right (this was at a county show!) help I don't know what to do!

We're on the Surrey Hants border and have entered lots of classes where we're the only Dales and we've never had a judge comment on the ribbons. If they do ask, then it's a good opportunity to make sure the judge knows what breed she is, and just tell them why they're there and I'm sure it'll be fine - they might even learn something LOL.

I used to tail ribbon all the time for everything but then people thought he kicked (and sometimes he does LOL) so for riding club level don`t bother now. If you are worried the judge won`t know what breed then thats a concern in its self LOL but I have found when they ask the age you can always drop it in conversation if needed. But I do always do the ribbons for anything any larger

Am I right in thinking they are there to distinguish from fells? That sounds quite encouraging though. I'll give it a bash! Do you do the green jacket/blue hat thing as well? I've never seen a green jacket for sale!

I don`t think so re fells I think it was a tradition when ponies worked to tie up their tales I`m sure someone will know on the board Have a look at mrs candy pretty ponies mears jackets you will see lots on a green theme. Green is deemed to be "correct". As for hat depends on you really some use a beagler orthers like me use a felt hat (green) or a blue brimmed hat depending what I feel like.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the ribbons are a tradition going back to when they were true working ponies, they used to have docked tails and the owners would put them in to pretty them up for the show ring. I know some people say it's to distinguish them from Fells in the show ring, but I don't think this was the real reason they were used - could be wrong though and I haven't a clue where I read it, and it is a useful indicator.
When we're showing we wear tweed jackets. Green seems to be the fashion at the mo, but I don't think it really matters as long as it's tweed. My daughter wears a navy hat but again I think it's more a fashion thing as I've seen black, brown and green at very high level shows. The important thing is to look smart and understated - not pink trousers and shirt like I saw some guy wear recently!!!

I have a blue tweed jacket but I might have a go at getting a green one (Don't tell OH! if he comments I've had it years!) What are the ruiles regarding hats. Riding hats are pretty warm to be honest but everyone down here seems to wear them. Also anyone got any recommendations re trousers? I've had a good look round town but haven't found any. Found somew beige toggi moleskins but they would be a bit on the warm side too. Would a smart pair of stone jeans be ok?

I have a pair of cream cotton m&s trousers nothing special for the summer then in the winter had a darker beige pair from matalans!! Don`t worry re spending lots of money its more about getting "the look" I think so search around and poss avoid equestrian shirts trousers as they cost fortune

Maxine's right re the trousers, you don't have to spend loads, I've got a smart pair of beige jeans and OH wears similar. You really should wear a hat, I presume this is in-hand, so if you don't want to wear a riding hat then a panama looks smart, I've got an australian leather one and on sunday I wore a navy trilby - but be prepared for the 'blues brothers' jokes.

I got my trousers from the Barbour shop. Although they were quite expensive, they were still cheaper than the horsey shops!!T hey are very lightweight so you don't bake in them. I bought a bigger size so that I could run in comfort!! There is a pic of me in them on the showing section under 'Cheshire Show'. I don't know what everyone thinks about them. I am new to all this myself! Maybe they look silly?? Who knows...

oh dear tail ribbons!!!!the first time we put ribbons in marleys tail,at his first show,i was asked by the judge "ahhh hes a kicker is he?" my reply was "no actually he is a dales....."he then preceeded to tell me he was a m&m judge and had been judging up in dales country the week before!!!!!!!
as for outfits in hand,i wore beige trou as you all have said before me,in-expensive,i think mine were a slightly outdated pair of m&s cotton, straight leg, with a nice short sleeved shirt and a belt, joddy boots, drover type hat,it was too hot for jackets....a waistcoat always looks nice too..gloves....beth has worn her tweed jacket shirt tie beige trou joddy boots and either hard hat or drover, and too has abandoned the jacket if its very hot...just as long as you look smartish, sensible, and cleanish....having said all that we once saw a woman step in for someone who couldnt manage their horse, she was wearing a vest top, shorts and flip flops and WON!!!!!!!its a standing joke in our house if you want to win get your flipflops on!!!.........
dare i say it....beths jacket is a sort of heather colour tweed!!!its lovely and very tastfull......well i would say that i bought it!!!
