I'm going to be doing local level showing with my darling Stumps, just a bit of prettiest mare, a few prelim tests, family pony (you get my drift)...but she has a lot of excessive hair. I'm talking about how can I tidy up her facial hair, as well as her mane, tail and feather without taking a great deal off. Although she's not a purebred, I do so love her dalesy feathers and hogging/clipping out isn't an option:rolleyes: Any ideas on how I can trim but keep it 'au naturel'? I tried to find pictures which best show her hair? Can you see the tufts?Mane, tail and feathersCheers

LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!! ;D ROFL
Dancer has furry tufts all over the joint! Natives can be as furry as you want!
Personally, I would run a brush through all her furry bits and go be the hariest pony there!!
The only thing I trim on D is his tail and that is because it drags on the floor otherwise!! Everything else - Au naturel!!!!!

Personally I don't trim anything on my ponies - don't think we are meant to anyway, but I know some people do take off moustaches and bearding etc. I actually prefer them with it than without, for me it makes each of my ponies what they are! A good grooming is what makes the pony stand out for me.. good luck with your classes.

I don't trim either, unless H makes such a mess of his mane and I level it up. He'll never have a full flowing Dales mane ^sigh^.
Enjoy your days out!!

I'm glad someone has posted about this...I've been wondering about it too! Before last month I hadn't done any showing at all so its all still very new to me still!
I had always kept Jay au naturel until the beginning of this year when he stayed at my friends yard for a few weesk so she could do some work with him for me. Whilst he was there she clipped him...which he desperately needed because he got unbelieveably sweaty and wasn't drying properly in the cold weather, poor lad! She also drastically shortened his mane and tail. I had a heart attack when I saw him because he looked so different! I didn't mind though because she did so much with him whilst he was there, as well as giving me lots of lessons, so we're now able to do much more together.
So now Jay's stuck in the 'transition phase'. His beard's grown back and his mane is growing pretty quickly, it just seems to be his tail which isn't growing.....he could do with some extensions! lol. He's also got a bridle path which I had to re-do before our show because it looked like he had a 3rd ear! Do I keep it tidy for now then let it grow perhaps over winter when we won't have any shows, or just bite the bullet and let it grow now into some wild mohican?!?
I'm sorry if I've hijacked your post chickflick....I do have a tendancy to waffle once I get going! Also, i know its a while off yet, but we're hoping to go out hunting a little bit next year. I've not seen any native types out with our local hunt, so how should he be 'dressed'....completely natural as for showing, or should I attempt to plait him?

Don't trim at all! The only thing I do on D is her tail if it is dragging on the floor. Then I attack it with thinning scissors so it looks as natural as possible.
Jay - not sure what to advise you. Probably wait till winter and leave it all grow wild! Interested in the hunting bit too as I hoping to do one next winter for the first time. I thought I would just go natural but will see what others say.

Excellent...was dreading having to wrestle his mane into enormous football-sized plaits!

Native - correct to hunt unplaited - if you dont plait you should wear 'ratcatcher' - tweed, the hunting people dont necessarily know this and may try and persude you to wear a hunt coat after the opening meet - after a 'discussion' about this with our old master and secretary I phoned the MFHA to check I was right - So they beat me by listing me in the hunt directory as amature whipper-in and I had to buy a hunt coat - but still didnt trim or plait. If youre staying out for any length of time however clipping will be essential.

Phew....thats a relief! Thanks rebeccajane. Hopefully we'll get to go out next season. I was hoping to earlier this year but my friend couldn't go. I need the moral support for my first meeting! lol

I do trim Dorothys beard as she hates getting it caught in her nose band and gets really irrate about it. I trim it as naturally as possible to about an inch or so, I dont touch anything else, not even her tickly moustache!! I dont use any coat gloss either, just lots of elbow grease!
