Hi,
Once again I am calling on all you DF's out there for help and advice. Pete and I are hoping to take the boys to a local show next weekend to enter Thor into the youngstock class and both of them into the mixed M&M.
Does anyone have any hints, tips advice or ideas for us as we have not done very much inhand at all and whilst not expecting to come away having been placed, do not want to disgrace ourselves either !!
Will be our first trip out with the boys in the lorry so excited and scared all at the same time.
Thanks for any help
Nikki

Ahh lots and lots of luck, its great fun.
Biggest tips anyone can give you is to smile and enjoy it. The classes are relatively simple in how they work. Just walk round as a ground, try to keep at their shoulders. The steward will then stop you in a corner and ask you one by one to trot a circuit of the arena to the back of the line. Practise this beforehand and find a nice pace to show off your boys paces best but try not to break into canter. If you don't worry though, its not the end of the world and just bring them back to trot and continue round.
When lined up and pulled forward try to stand him up square and neatly. Either by pulling forward or asking to take a step back. Again don't worry if it doesn't happen, its better to try and then just stand nicely rather than fidget about. When stood up stand in front of your boy so the judge can see his neck and shoulder clearly. Then walk away and after a bit make a loop to your right - always turn him away from you - and trot dead at the judge, he/she should move out of your way. Trot past the judge and round to the back of the line. You'll then probably be asked to walk round again and pulled into an order. Then rossette time!
Not sure what else to add really, there a few bits and bobs i think i do automatically. If they fidget don't be afriad to pick a bit of grass when stood up for the judge to get them to settle.
Thats about it really, just really enjoy it. Its a lot of fun doing the inhands. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Well, it looks like next weekend's show is not going to happen for us. I have hurt my shoulder, think I have strained it, and it has been painful since last Tuesday with now signs of getting much better thus leaving me unable to groom properly (especially as it is my right one), and certainly not able to hold an enthusiastic pony in the ring.
It is not written of entirely as we could still enter on the day if it improves dramatically but a pity none the less.
