We did the control of gaits and obstacle phases but not the orienteering. The control of gaits is a fast walk along a straight line about four feet wide and a few hundred yards long and then you turn round and come back at a slow canter. The obstacle phase varies but you need to be able to mount from both sides, dismount and lead up and down inclines, over a small ditch, through a corridor (sometimes a trailer is used). Remember to run your stirrups up everytime you dismount. The ridden obstacles are similar to cross-country fences but include things like a corridor, a bridge, an "S", bending poles, rein back, cantering under a pole, negociating a gate, riding up and down an incline. The BHS do a paperback handbook which has all the rules and suggested obstacles listed - mine was £5 but that was about five years ago. Have you seen this webpage? www.bhs.org.uk/content/Ods-More.asp?id=2312&pg=Competitions&spg=Information&area=7They also give you a list of stuff that you need to carry. I found a fishermans vest was very handy to put it all in. From memory you need a stop watch, first aid kit for you and your pony, a hoof cover, dayglo, water, mobile phone or money for a phonebox, I'm sure there's more....... I've never done the orienteering but I believe you get a map and have ten minutes(?) to copy the route on to it. The idea is to get round at the optimum time - not too quickly or too slowly. Hope you give it a go - it's good fun. Good Luck!

The one ive seen does not have the orienteering and is being classed as a "winter test" so its going to be Indoors - dont know if that would be good or bad!

I have tried Trec a couple of times - not in competition though, and have not done the orienteering.
We had to do everything mentioned above, in addition we had to dismount and put the horse in a circle, leave it and it mustn't move; do a small jump (they put black plastic under the jump I assume to imitate a ditch!); and they set out poles which doubled back on themselves so you had to do turns on the forehand to go around them without touching (bit hard to explain properly!). I would imagine being indoors it would incorporate a lot of that.
Have fun anyway, whereabouts is it?

We have done a few, level 1 is great fun, even the orienteering is not too bad! The obsticles are great fun! we did enter a level 2, but in fairness it was in the welsh championships!!!!! found the orienteering too hard and that was in the mountains where we live LOL..... Go and enjoy, it is the most social horsey sport we have found, particuarly good fun if you stay overnight as the nightlife is very good..... If you want any particular information please do let me know?
