Is there such a thing in the Dales world!! Well Belle was on basic cubes, sugar beet and chaff when she came home so i carried this on however she has now decided to pick out every cube from her dinner, or leave it entirely. If i soak it so the cubes break up she turns her nose up! Even when it comes to grazing she'd rather stand and watch the world go by! She has a munch on her hay but is far from a pig! Now this is a novelty for me! I know i have to watch her weight but from a growing youngsters point of view she needs the nutrients! So any thoughts? Could it just be her settling in though she is not stressed at all. Normally i can deal with feed issues, but would just like other peoples thoughts please!!

LOL - she obviously hasn't read the "How To Be a Dales" Manual yet!
Maybe you could replace the cubes with a mix of the same feed-value? At least she wouldn't be able to pick that out! Or maybe just replace the cubes with a feed balancer / general supplement. She looks in good body-condition so I think you're right in saying her feed requirements are just a need for nutrients.

When Blossom came she was sold on our grass, but for the first two days or so, she really just picked at food. She seemed completely calm and smoothly integrated, but I think it took a bit for her to mentally get settled. I don't want to alarm you, but Blossom also came down with a cough. So it could be all of Blossom's monumental shipping finally caught up with her, and it was this that supressed her hunger. You might keep an eye on Bell'es temp. It gives you a good baseline if nothing else. I know how distressing it is when they're picky Just keep an eye on her, and I'm pretty sure she'll pull round for you. Maybe some diced apples mixed in to tempt her??

Hmmmm Shell. where do I start with Merlin, he must be the only dales pony to struggle to keep condition on! the problem I had is Merls hates cubes or pellets he just gets bored with them, mixes he was ok with but because of his barley intlerance they are out of the question, when we were at YHL in November I spotted a new feed by spillers called conditioning fiber and no barley yippeeeee!!!! Merls now has a large scoop of this twice a day with sugar beet, and a cup of blue chip, I also add a lttle oil and garlic and he is looking really well, he also has ad lib hay. I should add that Tommy is also on the same diet and is looking fab on it.

Have you had her teeth checked? Bailey had his checked when I first got him as dentist was there and he had a lot of sharp edges already my dentist said that because babies are growing they get a lot of sharp edges but because they arent ridden most people never think to have them done. Sometimes the edges affect the jaw growth and they end up under or overshot. Tansy did but thankfully we caught it in time and he corrected it. My babies always love happy hoof as it smells nice or dodson safe and sound, but then again you dont really need chaff as nuts are a complete food in themselves I think I would tempted to give her her nuts and a bucket of readigrass separate. Plus ad lib hay of course Vanda if its any consolation Bonny is not a "good doer"! She requires feeding although in the summer she always looks well on grass in the winter she needs her grub unlike Jake who I practically starve every winter just to get about 3 lbs off him for him to spend all summer on starvation paddock!!
