Dont know where to put this, as its really a sandwich!
My dad is an industrial chemist and in his younger days travelled a lot to America to sell his products. He spent some time in Philadelphia, and brought home a very soggy sandwich for my mum to disect.... Remember at this time, (I was about 6 years old) there was no iceburg lettuce, mayonnaise was still French, and so some of the ingredients might of been a bit different.... Anyhow, all us kids are n ow adults and we still all make hoaggies at Christmas time.
ITs basically a salad sandwich, but very very good all the same.
I make about 36 of them on Christmas eve, and they sit in the fridge for guests for about 2 days, if they make it that far.
OK
You will need:
Bread rolls, fingers. Wholemeal or multigrain works best, but the original Hoaggie was with white bread roll.
Coleslaw
Ham
Mayonnaise
Tomato chutney or tomato relish
Slice of processed cheese such as Kraft
Slice of pickled gerkin
Sliced lettuce
Open the bread roll.
One one side put a generous dollop of coleslaw.
On this place a slice of cheese (folded or cut into two)
Then add a slice of ham (folded to fit)
Spread mayonnaise onto this.
Put on the slice of pickled gerkin
On the other half of the bread add the tomato relish
Chuck in some sliced lettuce.
Put the two halfs together and we then wrap with aluminum foil as a holder. Also keeps the hoaggie fresh when refridgerated.
To eat, unwrap some of the foil
THESE ARE BRILLAINT
