It makes me really angry. All the passporting fuss and expense and it makes no difference to the very thing that it ought to be making a difference about! The coloured mare has very distinctive markings, especially around her face. I really hope she finds her way back to Vicki.

I do agree that passporting is a farce when it comes to theft! Although I do like it when it comes to tracing past owners/ medical history etc. But there are so many differant agencies that passport ponies, and not one speaks to the other! You could have a horse with several passports raised by several differant agencies I bet and neither would know.
And so many horses are still not passported, and people are still willing to buy without.
How can something of that scope ever be policed effectively!?

A few weeks ago I went to a horse sale and was suprised tp see on the programme that they were offering a passport service for twenty pounds. What is the point in this system if I could steal a horse and take it to a sales a get a passport for it? I feel so sorry for the poor owner, I hope she gets her back.

But passports aren't intended to help the people who pay for them - the idea is to keep horses who've had certain drugs out of the food chain. There was never any intention that passports would reduce equestrian crime..........was there?

Sue, the ponies should still be checked at the Ports to ensure the passport fits that pony travelling, if it doesn't, who is to say what drugs that horse/pony has actually had!!!!!

Exactly!! But it isn't being done properly is it? And the fact that sales can issue passports just puts the mockers on the whole business. Sorry - I'm very cynical about this and have no confidence in the system at all. It has been a major cock-up (wonder if the board will allow me that one) from start to finish.

My heart goes out to the poor owner. It must be hell.
As for the passport system, I don't think the board will allow me to say what I really want to for a minute!

There is no point in passports, yet and it is certainly not intended to help horse owners - ever, DEFRA need to be able to keep tabs on livestock for future out breaks of disease. If this happens Im sure they'll tighten up on issuing pasports - my grumpy no faith in Defra whatsoever beleif anyway.
