I see Harley posted some questions earlier but has anyone come up with a western saddle that would fit a dales? I'm thinking about one but don't really know the practical side of western tack... eekk! Any sugestions? There is a 'western' school a few miles away but I don't want to visit and look and sound a complete twit...

Whereabouts are you mrsp? Only there is a Western trekking centre near Sheffield that takes out rides Western style. They use coloured cobs and Fell x's, so I'm sure they would know about what would fit a Dales. They are very friendly people and do brilliant rides out - I've been three times! I'm sure they'd be happy to help Their website is www.rockyswesternadventures.co.uk

The continental saddlery range do a short and wide in the flexi tree that suit native ponies. They also do short backed reiner saddles that will suit some Dales.
You may get a treelss saddle to fit- Barefoot Nevada (see plenty of cobs and Fells competing in these), the new, western Ansur, Bob Marshall etc.
WOW are working on a prototype western saddle at present, which will be pricey I guess, but fab for the Dales build.

I know how you feel I spent my whole youth riding western style on quarter horse/stock horses, and the english style of riding seemed so alien. You end up feeling like a fish out of water despite all the hours spent in the saddle. The biggest problems that I see with trying to fit a western saddle to a dales pony is the length. There really is very little to work with. Some saddles that may fit better than others are endurance, or barrel racing saddles. These have truncated the skirts that might otherwise jab into the hip, and cause difficulties with bends or turns. Also, I'd be very wary of the neccessary second cinch. If it lays too far back, it will turn into a bucking cinch, and that's not something you want.
