I´ve found an internet access place in the local library - so getting a DF fix! LOL
For those who don´t know I´m visiting my parents for a week. They have a lovely appartment overlooking the sea with views of Cadiz in the distance over the bay. The weather is dry and sunny, but very, very windy which makes it sadly rather chilly.
On Saturday we went to a stud where they breed Carthusian horses - like Analusians, but a different strain. They put on a lovely show in the covered arena with mares running free in a herd of around 30 or more! Three men rode stallions and guided the mares as they galloped round - but I think they knew what to do really. They gave driving and riding displays, which were all wonderful - but the best bit was when they brought in a huge herd of last year´s babies. They were so cheeky and funny and played as they galloped around the arena. It was lovely to see so many babies all together and clearly so happy.
The stud was beautifully kept and all the horses were in wonderful condition. There were breeding boxes where a mare had a foal recently - it was her first, but she didn´t seem to mind the visitors looking at it over the door. They have their own operating theatre as well, and an AI room with the dummy mare etc. All very interesting. The stallions were all kept in big loose boxes and let out for exercise in the fields every day. They were mostly friendly, although one or two scowled if anyone went near....I´m not surprised, they must get fed up of so many visitors ooooohing and ahhhhhing over them and trying to pat them! I did get some pics, but will have to post them when I get home.
The old mares are kept at the stud when they´ve finished breeding, and they´re used as nannies for the weanlings and younger mares. It was lovely to see them being so well cared for and given a job when their breeding days were over. They sell most of the youngsters, of course, and the woman who showed us around said she shed tears for every one when they left! If you have €1000 - €1500 you could buy a yearling.....not very expensive eh? (around 750GDP to 1200GDP)
It´s carnival time here so there´s loads going on - parades and live music and so on. The Spanish are so friendly and put up with our halting efforts to communicate! LOL
There´s an American Airforce base here and we see the airmen training along the beach from time to time. Yesterday I went with Mum and Dad to their church - an American Baptist bible thumping church! I felt very sinful at the end of the service - but everyone was friendly and we were invited out to lunch by the pastor and his wife....which was good and I felt better LOL
Better go now - my internet time is nearly over.... Will "see" you all when I get home. Lots of love........xx
