I see a chiropractor. I have arthritis in my back which causes muscle pain as they go into spasm, also the bony spurs can grate on each other - nice!
I went for the chiropractor because they do less of the clunk-click sort of manipulation, and more stretching and massage.
The chiro I see does about 15 mins of massage and then does the stretching. He also feels down my back and checks the alignment of the bones - I can now see when they are wrong, especially in my hips! He does a lot of stretching through my neck and shoulders to loosen everything off.
It sounds to me (though I am not qualified in any way) that your muscles might have gone into spasm - gone solid. How do they feel when you run your fingers firmly over them? Smooth or knotted? I good massage may be all that you need.
Is there a clinic near you that has both chiro and osteo? If there is you could have a consultation to see which they think you need to see. Or you could go to speak to your Dr and see what they think.
Good luck with it - you have my sympathies! Long hot soaks in the bath and ibuprofen might help too.

I've used both - osteo and chiro - for a compressed disc in my lower back. For me, the osteo was more useful and the effects lasted longer, but I think it depends on the individual case. The osteopathy was provided by the NHS, after consulting my GP. The chiro I had to pay for.
Hope you get it sorted soon. Helen
