As some of you will know, our young stallion, Bill (Colliery Bill II) is taking part in the Rare Breeds Survival Trust’s ReGENEration Appeal scheme, where they collect semen from good examples of rare breed animals to form a National Genetic Archive. Because RBST funds are limited, so are places and Bill is only the second Dales Pony they have accepted (the other is Kebroyd Tobago), so we are very proud and excited.
Two weeks ago, we got the call that there was a space, so Bill and Roger and I all got into the wagon and drove the 165 miles to Twemlows Hall in Shropshire. I’m delighted to say that Bill loaded, travelled, unloaded and has behaved at the stud like a perfect gentleman. Both Tullis and Aileen (the owners) have called him a superstar , the vet hasn’t needed to bother to sedate him to do any of the health checks (involving 5 days of intimate contact with his manly bits!) and Tullis wishes he had 20 more like him!
The best bit is that the tests have shown that Bill’s semen is remarkably good quality and came through the freezing/thawing tests with very high viability – amazing stuff, Tullis called it LOL. I will be having some straws collected for ourselves too, so any Dales people in distant parts will be able to use him.
If anyone has broadband and wants to get a look at him, go to the Stallion AI Services site at

click on Stallions Available, pick one, click on the webcam logo then, when prompted (it might need to download the programme first) enter

Those of you who haven’t seen him for a while will be amazed at how much width he has now.
I use mobile USB broadband access as we don’t have it available any other way, and it isn’t stable enough for me to get to see him, but son Chris phoned me from his holiday motel on some far-off peninsula in the New Zealand North Island to give me a running commentary on what Bill was doing - you’ll never guess………..eating! At least he's showing good breed characteristics
