thank goodness! Its our 16 year old neighbour, the one who does dressage, and has ridden Tilly in a dressage comp for us. She was out on her mare up Kinder Scout on Saturday, which was a wet day. Mare slipped, and fell, landing on Alice. She was on her own, could not get a phone signal (which is very often the case on Kinder). A mountain biker came along, strapped her to a tree to keep her leg straight. She is now in hospital with a broken fibia and tibia, waiting to see if she needs a metal plate. I feel sorry for her, obviously about her leg, but she had worked so hard to get ready for a big dressage competiion she had qualified for, which is coming up shortly. This is my biggest dread when out on our steep hills, the horse tripping, and us having a bad accident. I am not sure exactly which path Alice was on, but I have added a pic here to show one we reguarly come down, its very steep, and gets very slippy when mountain bikes use it in the wet weather. The bit at the bottom is a nightmare as you feel you are being tilted over the horse's head - well it does on a SBS dressage saddle LOL!!

Ooo that does look steep, can you ride down the bankings Mair?
Forgot to say I hope the girl is ok, sounds like a bad break that.

OMG Thank heavens the mountain biker came along and found her and was quick thinking to strap her to a tree. LOL, I wouldn't have thought of that. Very clever Poor Alice!! I know she's extremely bummed about the competition, but its a miracle she wasn't hurt worse. How's her mare doing? What a horrible fall. I know what you mean about having to make do. Sometimes that's the best you can get for hacking, so you have to balance going out and riding, or not getting to ride at all. Sending along some gentle healing vibes for both her and her mare

Not really Bev, the banking is very steep at the bottom, and full of tufty moorland grass - ideal for horses catching their toe on. I usually just go for it and hope for the best - usually with an audience of hikers, so don't want to look silly by coming off!!!
You can always come up and have a go, Bev (not at falling off, I meant the bridleway LOL!)

Yes, the mare was fine, someone led her home after the accident. To be honest, she is very find boned in comparison to our chunky gang, and could easily have broken her leg. In fact, when Alice's mum got the message, she thought it was the mare that had the broken leg ....
Rick has offered to help out with their horse feeding, as they have 4 to look to (yes I know we have 7 of our own!)

Thank goodness for the mountain biker! The trouble is we just can't guarantee what might happen on a hack, no matter how careful we are. Some of the rides near me have very steep banks - not so bad if you are going up but a different matter coming down, on a slippery surface with tree roots! Yesterday I was going up a muddy track which had got very boggy in the rain, Saturn kept trying to climb onto the bank but one time both his near side legs slipped under him and we tilted sideways at an alarming angle!! It's a shame for the girl having worked hard for her competition - but that's horses for you I suppose ...

I never used to worry about falling off - but I do now, cos as you get older they say you always fall harder, and a break can take ages to heal in "older" people!!
Perhaps its safer to take up a safer hobby .....what though?!!!

Poor Alice - what a nasty accident. Thank goodness she was found quickly. Normally I'm envious of your beautiful hacking but stories like this make me appreciate being in flat Lincolnshire! Mind you, our big worry is the pony slipping into one of the many deep narrow dykes round here.

that's very sad news and such a horrid thing to happen when ready for a major competition, but hopefully the girl will mend quickly - she does have age on her side bless her!
I hate riding downhill at the best of times, nightmare for me!
