vet came out again tonight, she is not too worried as she could feel some faeces there, She is changing his anti bioitcs to an oral mixture, but this does not come in for couple of days. Vet has now put odds 70/30 in Curlys favour so good news in that respect. Curly has lost a lot of weight, so discussing with vet this week on feeding programme. thank god work is so good about leave, for now... I thank god the fact he is insured though, she told me today the bill so far is just over £2000 ......

Good to hear Curly is still improving. I suppose it is to be expected there will be considerable weight loss after what he has been through.
I grumble about my insurance bill as I am covered for vets bills, but it is at times like you are going through that you realise its a godsend to have insurance.
Is there any limit as to how much you can claim for vet bills? Never really thought about it before!

Wonderful to hear Curly is continuing to improve and the vet has given a more positive prognosis. Changing to oral antibiotics has to be a really good sign he's turned the corner. It is suprising how quickly they can drop weight in circumstances like this - poor Curly. What a week this has been for you! I'm continuing to send healing vibes.

Pleased to hear he is fighting and improving. Its not the same condition, but this bought to mind a thread on the intelligent horsemanship site of a horse with Grass Sickness who survived after a long fight. Not sure if it will help give you hope to see it? ihdg.proboards91.com/index.cgi?board=help&action=display&thread=32611&page=1It is really just to give you hope that they really can pull through against tremendous odds.. Hres looking forward to such a good outcome for Curly xx

The positive odds is really good news, Tina. I'm so happy for you both after the week you have been through.
Not surprised about the weight loss as I saw the same thing with my young Fjord, but once he turned the corner, he began to stabilise and then put weight back on. Within 3 months he was looking well again. These natives are a tough breed.

That's good news that he's on oral antibiotics- he really is a fighter by the sound of it. I'd expect him to loose a lot of weight, but I'd be careful not to give him tonnes of feed to put it back on quickly- little and often rather than 2 big feeds a day.
Mair- some do have limits for the amount, worth checking out with your insurers. I think Pierrot's was around 5k limit when she had her teeth done.

Curly is definatly a tough cookie LOL.... He is looking so much better today, still obviously very laminitic and still in pain, but, the look in his eye is brighter and he whinnied to me when I went in! I did check the insurance, although I doubt whether I would have changed medication etc, (credit cards where invented for horse owners I thought....) the NFU covers for up to £5000 per episode. I am going to ask vet to x-ray feet extra in week or so, in fact anything she thinks may affect Curly regarding this illness, I am asking to have done on this treatment plan, I know that once we have submitted bill then the NFU will exclude so much that I will never be able to claim again if there is any damage etc. I am just hoping that when the vet comes out again on Wednesday, the liver enzymes have started to go down. Still do not want to hope too much that we have started to beat this as I know its going to be a long battle. but I am sure we will make it eventually. Thank you all......

Oh, bless him. It sounds like he feeling a little better, which is great.
With the charges vets make nowadays, £5,000 can soon mount up at an alarming rate. You are doing the right thing getting as much as you can before the exclusion comes into force.

Tina, I'm realy pleased to read that Curly is showing big improvements and is so much happier in himself! This has made my day! What a fighter he is and what strength you must have too. The 2 of you clearly have a very special bond. I've got all fingers and toes crossed for more good news re the liver enzymes.
