LOL at the name, think ALL colt foals are dim.......
Keeping everything crossed that he sucks later. Take it he has a good suck reflex?
Hugs to you all!

Well done for getting the foal to take a bottle - thats a start, isn't it? Hopefully, he will get hungry, and realise what that white stuff is his mum is squirting out.
I have asked Kathryn my animal healer friend to send lots of vibes to Amy and the foal.

Amy is being fantastic with him but wants him at her head end Fi was terribly foal-proud with Jacq (even though she's not a maiden) and, like Amy, insisted on keeping him right under her nose, so he didn't get the chance to suckle. We bottle-fed him for the first few hours to ensure he got the colostrum - we put the bottle between Fi's front legs so that he at least got the sensation of a warm horsey body next to him, even though the milk was coming from the wrong end. Fi got bored of trying to keep him under her head after a few hours and he was then able to suckle with a little help (ie. mare held against the wall and another human to guide him to the teat and fire milk over his muzzle!) It's a worrying time, but i'm sure he'll get there soon and you can relax a little now that he has had some immunity assistance If all else fails, keep bottle feeding him for the next few hours to keep his strength up

Lucy, Rescue Remedy is good - ok to use on the foal, even if you just manage to get some round his lips, it would benefit the mare - and stick a few drops on your tongue. I am sure you could do with something, given the stressful day you have had.

Waiting to hear from the Adam after surgery's finished.
Amy is being much better and will stand on her own whilst he fumbles backwards without turning round but he's still too high and gets discouraged too quickly even though she's squirting at him.
How do they survive in the wild?
Can't find her afterbirth (or where she foaled) as the grass is too high! So am hoping that's alright. Paul said as she'd got nothing hanging she'd probably clensed okay.
Clair will ring you when vets been again, thanks.
Thanks to everyone!

Any luck yet Lucy? if Amy is very engorged the teat may have disappeared into to her udder, it might help if you can milk her and reduce the fullness of the udder - feel free to cyber slap me if I'm trying to teach ones granny to suck eggs Sending lots of positive and suckling vibes

We had to do this for a mare this year, sounds like Foalie is just getting a little tired. Can you strip any milk off Amy to give to him to give him some extra energy? Its something I never thought i would be able to do off this particular mare but if you go in with your body against the mare and keep your hand high on her udder its possible to strip the milk without endangering yourself, get someone to hold the mares head and perserve as I would bet that once you've started stripping some off the mare stands as the pressure is realeased.
If you can do all that, have you a large 10ml syringe anywhere (or any clean, brand new syringe) and decant into that for the foal to suckle off?, try to just trickle it onto his toungue? Then try to do as Cadeby says and do it through past the udders if possible.
Foalie will get the idea and he'll be away but foals are so difficult and impossible to manipulate actually onto the udder as you can't turn their heads for them.
We ended up doing this every other hour for a few times but then foalie got the hang of where the milk really got it from.
Hope he latches on soon
A xx
