We recently visited Dominque Guillet in France. He is breeding a string of tall geldings for driving out of a big mare Concoret Jonquille. She's 15.2HH. She has Lummas Rambo as her grandsire, but then my mare Becky has Lummas lines - her sire is Lummas Prince II and she is "normal" height at 14.1HH. I guess it depends on a combination of genetics, nutrition, sex (ie. whether gelded or not) and chance Nice head-shot of your girl x

I think Nancy's Knight in Louisiana is around 15.2, so yes, they can get taller What a beautiful photo She looks like she'd make a wonderful dressage partner. Do people mistake her for a friesian? ;D

Well that's weird I posted a reply earlier today but it's disappeared . Anyway my Cherry is around 15hh but by Village Chieftain who I think was only 14.1hh. Olivia (now owned by Emily - drummersmum) was even taller and she is by Wolsey Master Oliver, again around 14.1hh. Lorraine had bred a few more big ones but I have no idea what makes them tall as one of Olivia's full brothers was ony 13.3hh My youngest Gem is about 14hh but very compact and chunky, she's by Swayfield Ben (don't know his height - think it's about normal 14.2hh-ish). Personally I like them bigger as riding ponies but sometimes if they go overheight they can lose the pony characteristics and become more horse-like. Cherry although big is still very ponyish.

I can't remember who owned her but they used to post pictures of a lovely mare who's stable name was Dorothy - wasn't she 16hh (I remember pics of her hunting in Shropshire(?) )?

Norma still hasn't written back, O well it sometimes takes awhile. Yes most people do think Pearl is a Frisian. She does shows a lot of potential for dressage, my mom is currently working with her, her only hard spot is that she is a bit lazy. Beloved Beauty is her half sis, through Black Robbie and she is only 14.2. they don't look at all alike either.

That's okay, Americans have had more exposure to the Friesians than the Dales ponies. They think Blossom's some sort of grade draft pony cross

There is a Copylane dales on the circuit that is up to height from looking at him. However, height is very desceptive without using an actual stick so I couldn't say how tall at all.
Most Lummas Ponies I know are not overheight and I've never encounted them as being reputable as being overly tall to be honest.
Like Pam said taller ponies emerge in every lines and its rarely to do with breeding alone.
We have done one cross thats resulted in about a 14hh pony, one I don't know the height of and one thats fast approaching the 15hh mark, if not a touch more. Neither parents or immedate grandparents were of the tall or short pursuasion, its just how things grow (or not)
We tend to find with the dales you get the types that steadily grow upwards and outwards evenly (great for showing youngsters) or those that shoot up lots as a youngster and can feel like they are going to top out over the 14.2hh mark but then never put another inch of height on but fill out and out for the next 3 years.

I can't remember who it was that told me Lummas ponies go tall Anna, it was a few years ago now! I've no idea how big his parents are.
Pam - Burdon Freestep was Harley's great grand-sire, so that's quite interesting.
He's definitely kept his pony character!

Yes, that is interesting. and I have a half Dales gelding from Raspotnik farm who's dam was a 15.2 Shire x Paint, and his sire was 14.2. He turned out to grow to a good 16.0 hands. It must have been the Shire coming out. Burden Freestep is Pearl's great-grandsire too.

Very unlikely Dawfism Tina seeing as his mum and dad were both good sizes and Liz is also out of Jet and is about 14.hh, i am sure he will catch up in good time Personally i prefer them small, the smaller the better. One of our best dales ponies was only 13.2hhh but boy could she jump like a stag.

felix is only just 13.3/14hh now and hes 8 this year.i think some do grow slower than others.i again prefer them to be around 14hh mark for me. its horses for courses and what suits one doesnt have to suit another.

I am sure your boy will grow more Tina. I have one mare that grew about 1 1/2 inches this summer at age six.she is now about 14.1. I personally really don't care if they are big or small, as long as they don't go under 14.0. I am pretty small myself though..
