Healing vibes for Winnie please. I came down this morning to feed the ponies to find poor Winnie with one eye tight shut and his lower eyelid inverted, swollen and red! He seemed fine in himself and not at all off his food but it was clear an immediate vet visit was required - why does this always happen at a weekend? This is a pic Ali took with her phone: a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s320x320/407458_10150626377877425_604757424_10926364_2025628305_n.jpg[/IMG] The vet was here within 30 minutes and gave Winnie a thorough check. The eye looks far worse than it actually is but I have to keep him in and he is wearing a fly mast for extra protection. It sems there is nothing in his eye, no sign of damage, no scratch to cornea etc and he can see OK but it looks awful and must be jolly painful. The vet gave him intravenous antibiotics and anti-inflammatories and I have to wash his eye and put antibiotic drops in 4 times a day which won't be easy. He is still fine in himself and eating/acting as normal but he is still trying to rub his eye on the stable wall. I am now thinking he may have a tooth or sinus problem and this is what is causing him to rub his eye. The vet will be back tomorrow...........

Sending lots if heal fast thought to Winni. The good thing with eyes is they can heal really fast too. Hopefully the vet can do some basic teeth and sinus checks today.

Oh poor old Winnie, hope the vet can find out what is the problem. Would bathing it with a saline solution help to sooth it

Vet has been delayed on an emergency - why do horse emergencies always happen at a weekend? She will be coming later today but Winnie's eye is already looking quite a bit better. Today he hasn't objected to bathing and drops so it must be less sore.
I now think we might have 2 seperate problems. I can see how he is injuring his eye by scratching it on a breeze block edge - he has always had itchy eyes/face, probably allergy related. But the nasty smell on his breath could be unrelated - I have a feeling he has got some food impacted in his mouth so the vet is coming with gag etc.

Poor old Winnie.
I have to pick James' teeth (yuk!) - its something to do with the way they change shape as they age.
Hope its something relatively simple.

Vet has been and is very pleased with how quickly his eye is healing. As for the smell from his mouth, we still don't know for certain. He has no discharge at all and nothing indicating sinus problems or abscess. The vet put a gag on and gave him a thorough check. Other than pulling a bit of chewed hay out she could find nothing wrong. No gaps in his teeth at all which is pretty amazing for a 39 year old pony!
He's on anti-inflammatories and extra antibiotics. He seems perfectly happy in himself and is taking great pleasure in teasing Harvey over the fact that Harvey can't come in the field shelter (I've converted it into a stable for Winnie).

Just seen this Pam and so glad the eye is healing. I have noticed that some old horses do have an odd smell on their breath. Hope Winnie continues to improve.

Aww poor Winnie, glad he is on the mend Pam. They do seem prone to all kinds of things as they age, I suppose everything slowly changes including their immune systems and their ability to recover from seemingly minor things (bit like us!). Maybe changes in their digestive systems can cause smelly breath. Hope he recovers soon

Oh poor Winnie! So glad the eye is healing. I wonder what is causing the odd breath smell? The ABs should hit any infection anywhere though. Lots of love to you and hugs and scritchies to Winnie! x

His eye looks almost normal now which is incredible when you consider how awful it looked on Saturday. The breath smell is still strong and it's one of those horrid smells which cling to your clothes. I'm supposed to be keeping him in but I've let him out for a wonder this morning as it is such nice day and if it is sinus related then moving about should help.
