having visions of a cat rolled up like a pastry. Actually that's a really good technique, but Mister's been getting tablets and medicated for so long now that I think a towel wouldn't work effectively with him. At the moment, its scruff, hold front legs, pill cat, then trickle the water down his throat to ensure the pill gets chased into his tummy quickly. I'm giving him most of a can of cat food about an hour to an hour and a half ahead of the pill so he has something on his tum to help buffer the pill (the vet said it won't affect the absorption of the antibiotic ) and then afterwards, he gets the rest of the canned food partly as a treat, partly to ensure the pill really is down

At least it sounds like he has turned the corner. Fingers crossed he will eat the latest lot of pills Debbie. It sounds exhausting for you.

Progres report: yesterday Eldon was taking a nap, so I pilled Mister all on my own Other than one long tooth mark streaked down my index finger, it went really well. He was so ticked at me, but we did manage to get the water down too. Overall I'm not too sure about this new med. Mister's body seems so much warmer to the touch. The wound looks like its continuing to heal, so we'll carry on as is for the moment. If it doesn't, or appears to be backsliding, I'll get on the phone to the vet and we'll go from there. keep on mending Mister!

That takes some skill pilling a cat on your own! I'm so glad he's still making good progress Debbie.

Update: so we've been on the second antibiotic for 11 days and two days ago, I looked down at Mister's elbow and staph again Overall the wounds on his leg are mending very well, but I was so bummed to see the staph So phonecall to the vet. Mister's vet not available until Monday. Spoke to fab wife to vet that's in (and he's an older vet so been there/done that/seen it) and I mentioned what was happening and should we get the 3rd antibiotic in? We'll find out more on Monday, but we're switching Mister back to the original antibiotic for the weekend, and possibly more of them on Monday. The vet did mention that he's spoken with a colleague and there is an option to culture this staph in Mister's wound, send it way, grow it, kill it and bring it back as a vaccine to inject him with. The vet said they didn't understand why, but it kick starts the immune system. He said they've used it with good success in staph problems in cattle herds. At this point we're all for it, especially if it will help Mister finally get this cleared once and for all. We'll also be starting Mister on a probiotic. After months on end of antibiotics, I'm sure his GI could use some pampering.

I was so hoping Mister would be clear of the infection now, poor lad. This must be taking it out of you all! Probiotics sound a very good idea after all he's been through. More healing vibes for Mister.

Staph in Missouri is horribly resistant, and in some cases they can't kill it, only keep it at bay. One of my uncles went into the hospital with a heart problem and died of a staph infection in the stomach its practically a death sentence here. Overall Mister's still doing well. He's been amazing over being pilled daily. Eldon and I team up on him now, but after we let go, he's a little ticked, but happy to be fussed. Thankfully he holds no grudges. Last night behind his elbow looked puffier again. Monday's appt can't come soon enough for me at least this vaccine option gives me great hope that we can finally get this cleared for him.

Yesterday was Mister's vet appt. He told everyone who would listen that he was not thrilled with seeing the vet again but honestly, he's such a good soul to put up with all the poking and prodding and looking. And I did see him enjoying the car ride to and from the vet. I'm sure he's happy to see any sort of scenery. The room he's currently living in doesn't have a window to keep him calm about being indoors. Upshot: the vet was thrilled at the progress Mister's made with the 2nd antibiotic and he wasn't keen to switch to another. So we've got a refill of 7 more days plus the 3 we have, leaving another 10 days of antibiotics. We did discuss the probiotic, which they didn't have for kitties. They had one for dogs, but I've never given one to a cat and haven't a clue if they have the same gut flora since Mister's never had diarhea, we decided to give it a pass. The vet was pretty sure his gut flora was okay, and Mister's now tipping the scales at his heaviest weight. And after searching high and low, bringing in the other vet and 5 assistants, they finally spotted a culture tube. The whole time Mister was squirming worse than most toddlers. He was in a huff and wanted to go home. I wanted the culture done. I'm paranoid after Amanda being stuck with a staph infection for 10 years, and I want to make utterly sure this thing is fully gone. So we got a culture from the wound. The result with either tell us the antibiotic is killing the staph completely (and the pus I saw is normal wound healing pus, but I rather doubt it because of the colour) or we will have gotten the staph culture so they can grow it out and create the vaccine from it. All in all, I'm very happy with yesterday's vet visit. Most of Mister's wounds are healed/healing and looking very good. Just the last bit around his elbow and armpit to go. What an ordeal he's had to undergo!

Gosh Debbie...he is the most extraordinary cat to have endured this ordeal as well as he has. So glad things are continuing to heal well.. Bet he will go crazy the first time he is allowed back out side.

That's good news. As Leann says, Mister is an amazing cat to have coped with all these weeks of treatment. He deserves a good outcome.
