Dalesfans that still come on here π I'm trying once again to move away from fb, so how is everyone and whatcha doing this week? I'm just sat here waiting, vet has just been to Fashion for suspected colic, but vet said it's not, however she seems to have hurt her NS hind, she's had pain relief and sedation, she was very sweaty and not happy. Off back out shortly to check and give her some hay . If she's not much better in the morning looks like a trip to the clinic for xrays π

Happy New Year to you all from me too. I'm also getting away from FB this year, if I can, and am going to post on here even if I'm the only one to read it lol. I hope Fashion is OK this morning. I didn't know about hind end lameness/stiffnesss as a possible colic symptom until Harvey suffered with it last March. At first I thought he had injured himself in the field or/and was tying up behind but it turned out bad colic. Not a pleasant way to learn something new Let us know how Fashion is getting on. Andy is finally back at work and we found out yesterday that his suposed septic arthritis was Pseudo Gout which is equally painful but didn't require the 2 weeks of strong andtibiotics he was given! But the hospital were right to play it on the cautious side. So I can get back to horsey stuff this week with Eve. Took her up the busy main road in hand for the first time the other day - normally I take her down the quiet side lanes. Cars were whizzing by and I was sh****ing myself but Eve loved it. In fact she was so interested in everything that she forgot to be naughty. Today I'm setting up a mini agility course for her in the yard. Tomorrow Lou is coming (the lady who has been helping me start Eve), farrier in the afternoon so a busy start.

I'd never heard of the hindend stiffness being a colic symptom, but it does make sense. They'll tighten up to protect their tummy and try to get comfortable. I'm so glad your vet was able to rule out colic, but I hope Fashion mends quickly and easily. It's such a worry when they're under the weather. I'm so glad Andy's symptoms turned out to not be sepsis! As you say, it's a bit overboard with the antibiotics, but far better safe than sorry. I so hope with the right diagnosis they can get the pseudo gout under control. It can be a balancing act with minerals when the kidneys aren't happy. How funny that Eve was better behaved with so many things to engage her mind and look at she does love to be entertained! I'm glad you've got help to keep up the wonderful progress for her. She's so lucky to have come to you Out here we're in the midst of a winter's storm. The wind is up a bit this morning. Blossom's thoroughly enjoying being a solo pony yet again. She never was convinced LeeLoo was a pony. She probably would be sociable with another Dales Pony, but clearly minis and foals are not her forte. For now it gives me breathing space to catch up with mushroom work, and chores around the house and farm.

Well Fashion still not right this morning so loaded her up and off to the vets, temp and levels of other things up, rectal exam showed rear quarter displaced? and they could feel spleen (which apparently you shouldn't be able to), so surgery was advised, left her there at 12.30 and just had a call to say she's recovered well from anaesthetic. Good news, all intestine examined and part from a little displacement all ok, however they now think she might have problem with liver due to the levels of things in her blood etc. Can't remember what they said, just pleased she is ok
These things are sent to try us π€π

Oh poor Fashion! Glad sheβs come through the op ok, but what a worry about the bloods suggesting other problems. Healing vibes for her. Is she a Dales?
And so pleased to read that your Andy is doing ok too Pam.
Made me smile about Eve, last time i took Sammie to a Trec comp, he was very βalertβ in the plain warm up arena shall we say, yet once into the competition arena with all the stuff and obstacles he was more settled. Gave him something to think about I reckon.

Oh Alison, what a scare and what a way to start the New Year! So glad she got through the surgery OK. I hope the liver problem is nothing serious. Do keep us posted. Remind me - who is Fashion? I've lost track of everyone's ponies because I find FB too "messy" to follow. Perhaps we should start a thread with a list of our ponies for those few of us who come on here.
Debbie - yes the hind end symptoms do make sense when you think about it. Holding themselves to try and keep more comfortable can even lead to tying up. This bit of info I learned through Harvey came in useful just a month later when Andrea's new pony, Pippa, came in with strange hind end symptoms (she won't mind me telling you this). Her vet initially thought it was rear laminitis but Andrea just knew it couldn't be that. When I described Harvey's symptoms to Andrea, it sounded too much of a coinsidence so she queried it with her vet who confirmed that yes, it probably was colic. Fortunately Pippa got over it very quickly and it seems she has suffered with it that time of year in the past.
Fi - that's interesting to hear about Sammie. These Dales are far to inteligent and nosy for their own good. Eve is a very quick learner and needs constant stimulation - I just hope that I am up to it but I'm very lucky in that I have lots of support from friends. I don't think I would have got this far without them. I think Trec could turn out to be her thing though.

Oh no I feel so bad for you and Fashion. keeping everything tightly crossed for a good outcome. I wonder what was causing the liver troubles? Pam I think a thread so we can list our ponies is an excellent idea! It's been awhile and members have had ponies come and go, I know I have. I agree, FB is messy, that's a perfect description! Everything is tossed together, and I find I can't follow threads as easily as I can on here. Wow, so this stiff hindend thing really is a good indicator of tummy issues/colic? I'd never heard of it before, although they certainly can look pottery coming in from a field with colic. Winter's a tough time for it, as so many don't drink enough water.

Better news this evening, Temp and Heart rate back down to normal, she is quiet but comfortable and is wanting to eat π
Looks like she's staying at the vets over the weekend for monitoring. She mentioned liver abscesses again x
Pam, I'm really pleased that Andy is better x

Alison - that's excellent news re Fashion. Fingers crossed she continues to improve and can come home soon. I don't know anything about liver abscesses but sounds painful- will have to look it up now.
How on earth do you cope with 6/7 ponies! Last winter I had 5 and really struggled. It was exhausting, especially as we had such a wet winter and I never want to go through a winter like that again. It is lovely to be back to 3. Do you have help? I do hope you are taking care of yourself.
