A fascinating read Kristy! Lovely to see the pics of him as he developed over the last months and what a great start you've given him. Looking forward to the next installment.

That's a really good record of what you've done so far - and his calmness and politeness is a tribute to your care and attention - so well done!!

Whatever you are doing it is working for Duke and that is all that matters! He has come on fantastically and is accepting of all that has been asked of him, what more could you want ;D (wish I could say the same of Olivia ;D).

well done kristy and what a fab account of dukes "travels" with you up to now you are doing a superb job with him. there isn't ONE single way to back and start a pony/horse.......each one we have done over the years has been different to the next and needed different techniques that suit that particular pony.......so nobody should say you have done anything at all wrong, especially when duke is coming along so well. he is a credit to you.

You have done brilliantly with Duke, Kristy. I really enjoyed reading your account of his training to date. What a handsome boy he is too.

It made great reading, well done with your pony and keep us updated. You have taken lots of time to write all of this down for us to read and to benefit from, I for one appreciate it, thank you. Barbara

Im glad that you all enjoyed it.
I have just read it back and apologies for all the spelling mistakes, lol!
I have ridden Duke again today and had a feeling that he wasn't going to be as good as on Sunday.
He was great to get on, Carolyn just held his head and my stirrup again as I got on from the block. He made no attempt to move away which is great. Then I asked him to walk on using my voice and a light leg aid which prompted him running backwards-naughty Duke.
Carolyn came and led me for a few strides and then he started going forwards nicely. After 5 mins of walking around and changing the rein etc we tried a trot in a straight line on the left rein, again using my voice and a light leg aid. That was great we made it once around the school. Then he thought he would try and nap near the door to the outside which promted more running backwards at which point Carolyn passed me a schooling whip and he got a little tickle on the backside which got us around the corner. We trotted again and when I asked came back to walk. Then reastablished a nice walk, did some walk tror transitions to make sure he was beginning to learn what leg was for and then dismounted. I rode him for just over 10 mins and had lunged him for 10 mins before I got on.
No piccies as need to be outside but i shall try tomorrow and am off into the field to see if I can get some outdoors shots.

LOL...typical youngster...one step forward, three step back...and cha cha cha for good measure They do try it on, and ALL of them monkey about in one form or another. However, its so supporting to the riders n mums to know that its not 'just your kid'. Well done for getting him through his wiggly second ridden training session!

Dukes third ridden session today, this time Carolyn rode him as she has much more experience in riding youngsters than me and we decided from the beginning he needs to be able to cope with different riders onboard so he doesn't become precious. Tacked up ready to go And another Stood really well to be mounted then when he was asked to go forward he ran backwards again so Carolyn took one hand off the reins and smacked him quite firmly on the bottom with a schooling whip. This did the trick as he moved off nicely and didn't run backwards again, hopefully he is beginning to get the hang off voice and leg mean forwards now. Did quite a bit of the session in trot just encoraging him forwards, he was a good boy I even managed to get a pic of Carolyn on him outside the stables, sorry they are not very good but my batteries died in the camera after the first 2.

It is great, like reading an autobiography! I have never had the opportunity to have a youngster and it is something I would love to do, so reading your experience in such detail is great....
