Duke had his 4th ridden session today and was the 1st time that he wasn't lunged before he was ridden. Carolyn rode him again as I have a very fat badly bruised toe from tripping over a metal stand and found when I tried to ride Danny that it hurt like hell so not a great recipe on a youngster. Today we had some lovely bursts of walk and trot, with him seeking the contact of the bit, tracking up nicely and round and then there were some moments when he spun round in 360 degree circles and tried to go backwards in temper when he was asked to turn across the school Typical baby though so Carolyn just patiently encouraged him forwards in walk to start with and then trot. She did say that he does feel very backwards thinking. Any ideas anyone? He is really forward on the lunge and long reins, I know carrying the weight of the rider is hard when he doesn't have his balance but I can't see what differant we can do with him. Im going to see if I can ride his out down the bridleway with Donna on Danny on Friday and see if straight lines outside are easier and get him a bit more forward thinking.

Well we did indeed go for our first ridden hack out on friday and Im vey pleased to say that he was a star We went out with me riding Duke and Donna riding Danny, with Duke attatched to a lead rope held by Donna just incase. Going down the drive we encountered a horsebox coming in, the schoolbus at the bottom and then a 4x4 with a flatbed trailer on the back all without bating an eyelid. Then lots of cars, 2 more small buses and a full size coach on the way along our generally really quiet country road. We were out for just over 30 mins and even had a little trot up the bridleway, and stood still while Danny opened the gates etc so was very pleased with him and want to try and get him out a few more times before he is turned away.

Not sure if anyone is still reading now but I have started so I shall finish it.
Yesterday and today I have done some long reining and lunging.
Yesterday I started with a few mins lunging on each rein with his saddle on and then spent 20 mins long reining him around the school. He was really good especially as there was another pony in the school who was jumping and Duke wasn't bothered by that at all. We even went over a few poles on the floor.
Today we did more lunging than longreining. I lunged him with the side reins on really loosley and really got him going forwards in trot into the contact, he was super and is so responsive to the voice.
Then I did some long reining in trot doing lots of turns across the school. Really pleased with him and will ride him again the next time I do something with him. Once the rubber mating arrives he will come in on a night time.

I've printed it off to read at my leisure - before I get caught and sacked! I have to know why you have a black toe if nothing else!

Lol, I have a black toe from kicking a stand at work as I tripped over it, so not horse related at all.
The couple of days of lunging and long reining really paid off as I rode him on friday and he was much more forwards and no napping whatsoever in either walk or trot and we could change the rein quite happily in trot.
Two more weeks of working him then he will be turned away. I will try and get some ridden pics before he is turned away.

This was a very interesting read, thank you. The "backward" thinking in the school struck a chord.
Waiting for the next instalments.....
