Scruff has pulled a muscle in his leg chasing a hare. Are there any anti inflammatories that are safe for me to give to him without taking him to the vet? Rest assured he WILL go to the vet if it doesn't clear but I just wondered if there was anything I could give him as I'm 99.9% certain that there is nothing seriously wrong. If it was me I would take arnica and ibobrufen or aspirin but have no idea if there is anything that is safe to give him apart from his arnica.

I give my dogs arnica (3 pills in feed for a medium sized dog), and I've given them Beechams powders before too with good results and no problems.. I've often thought about Neurofen but never done it.

Poor Scruff! One of the human anti-inflammatories is dangerous for dogs but i can't remember which. I expect some one here will know. Probably a couple of days rest will do the trick. Why not give the vet a ring for advice to be on the safe side?

I think the active ingredient in Beechams is paracetamol isn't it Jane? What sort of dosage have you given?

That is a good idea Pam. It's what I've often advised other people to do so why didn't I think of it myself? DUH!

Rung the vet, got a dopey sounding girl on the reception who said "no she doesn't THINK there is anything safe." She certainly wasn't prepared to talk any further or let me talk to a vet and shesounded so unsure and dopey I'm not sure I believed her! Perhaps I'll stick to arnica, gentle massage and cuddles!

One sachet twice a day either in meat or in a syringe with water and sloshed down the gullet - not easy!! It worked for my dogs, but I'm not saying it's totally safe - and if it is paracetamol you need to think about liver etc.
Sid had anti-inflamatories when he hurt his leg, I'm tryong to remember the name so I can google them and see what was in them.
Massage, rest and arnice sounds as good as anything else Linda!

TBH - metacam (which is the most common NSAID) is so safe and cheap I'd be inclined to go get some from the vet. Then you'll have it in the cupboard if he pulls anything again. I have it for the rats and it's very good stuff.
Hmm - that's not a very helpful reply is it - sorry!

In the US I used to recommend baby aspirin for older dogs with arthritis coming in for a grooming. It HAS to be baby asprin, absolute NOT ACETOMINOPHEN. I'm not sure one way or another over ibuprofen. We don't have the paracetamols available to us here, so have no clue on those either.
As Scruff is reasonably young, I should think the arnica tablets would do the trick.

I read somewhere that ibuprofen can stop a dog's kidneys working within seconds.....so maybe avoid those!

Whoooh, that's definitely not the desired effect! So a sound NO to ibuprofen as well. No, for myself, I think the only true safe one was the baby aspirin. Good luck finding it, though, its getting harder and harder to find in the US.

Easy enough for me as my dad takes it on prescription!
However, I'm leaving it until tomorrow as Scruff is on three legs when he gets up but as he warms up he can walk properly for a while. I'm giving him arnica, very gentle massage and lots of love. If he is as bad and no better tomorrow I may try him with some aspirin or bute.

Casper ate some ibroprofen (nurofen) as a puppy and it ulcerated his stomach and made him ill for months, I took him straight to the vets and made him sick and still he was poorly. Dont under any circumstances give him any antiimflatory not prescribed by a vet.
