YM had a mare with an abcess- went hopping lame. Farrier came out and removed the shoe and dug as much as he dared which didnt seem much. It took a couple of weeks and she was having her hoof tubbed in a hot dilute hibiscub solution before being poulticed daily. It eventually erupted on the coronet band although we did get some from down the sides of her frog. When it di erupt it was poulticed until it went clear and then sprayed with the green ?mycin spray.

Really sorry to hear that D is still not right. It is confusing to get such contrary opinions, isn't it? Topaz has bad problems with abcesses & right now has one that's been really difficult for several weeks. What Mickey says is so true, Topaz has had a few that dragged on & then erupted at the coronet band. I hope the poulticeing will encourage D's to open at the bottom, so much more comfortable for the poor pone. Topaz bad ones usually will open with hot soaks of epsom salts. Healing vibes for D and hugs for you.

Well my trimmer had been out this afternoon. She has shown me that D's abscess is likely to burst out at the coronet at the front as this was bulging a bit today and was a bit warm and soft. She has cut back the sole a little and shown me where the abscess started. She recommended that I continue to poultice for a few days to try and draw it out.
D was a star. She didn't want the trimmer to lift her foot and cut into it and tried to snatch it away. I produced a packet of polos and started some clicker training. She then stood still with her nose in my tummy. Every time I tried to walk round to see what Jane was trying to show me she pranced about again. As long as I stayed by her head he stood really still. I'm not sure if she was taking confidence and comfort from me or the packet of polos! LOL!

LOL....we take what we can get! ;D Really pleased this seems to be coming to some form of a head, though. The sooner it can erupt, the sooner you can get it gone Poor D's tootsie must be feeling so sore.

Linda, D responds to you, ........Y O U !!!!!!! I've seen it with my own eyes! The polos might be an added incentive but not the primary reason. You are her rock I'm glad Jane got out to you. Did she speak to the vet whilst she was there or are you still piggy in the middle? Lxx

Id say D was good for you too Linda, you have a very special bond with her with everything you have both been through and you never once gave up on her which is very special in itself! I hope it bursts soon and heals quickly, must be awful just waiting for it to happen. xxx

Oh no - poor D. THis must be agony. Really hope she's feeling better now. Sending huge heealing vibes to her - and of course you are more comfort than the polos!
Appalled that you're getting such contradictory advice too. Merlin has had some HUGE abscesses in the past but vet and farrier were in complete agreement about treatment. Neither were in favour of antibiotics which they said tended to deal with some of the infection but still leave the root cause and pockets of infection behind so that you risked either an abscess tracking up and bursting out at the coronary band or an abscess underrunning the whole sole. Instead farrier was to pare away bit of the sole or hoof in order to create drainage hole; I was to keep Merlin in so that the foot stayed clean , apply animalintex poultices hot and wet twice a day until they stopped coming out with pus on them at which point I was to apply a dry poultice for 48 hours and then farrier came back to check it and put protective covering on so that M could go back out in field. Worst one (caused by Mr M standing on very thin sharp piece of metal hidden in grass which sliced up his whiteline) took 3 weeks of poulticing with twice weekly visits from farrier to check on progress followed by having to wear special shoes in front for 3 months to cover the hole in his hoof while it healed (the hole itself was plugged with an antiseptic substance that the farrier changed each week.)
PS and yes Duck/Duct tape is one of the better inventions!
