How is Bea coping with box rest? Hope he's not finding it too stressful.

Not stressful, Pam - but he's started barging out again. I'm feeling very down at the mo because he barged out past me when I went to top up his water bucket and set off at a fast trot across the yard then he went and hoolied in the field and he's SOOOOO lame, - and that's after ice bandages and cold hosing and ice clay poultices. I know I've got to be patient, but I'm back at work on Tuesday and I was hoping a week of intensive care would make a big difference - but any good I've done he's probably reversed with his stupid antics.
I'm cross with myself too for trusting him - I usually make him back up before I go in and take a crop into the box with me (he respects that and I never have to use it)....but because I was carrying a heavy water bucket I didn't pick up the crop - he backed up as usual but the minute the door opened he shot out and away.

Oh Sue, try not to beat yourself up about it. It is easy to say in hindsight what you should have done. I know how depressing it is when you seem to take a step back for every 2 steps forward. These things happen. Try not to let it get you down. It's not been that long since Bea started box rest, is it? I'm sure he didn't do much damage in the field - was he more lame when he trotted out of the stable? Maybe he was just stiff from standing in? Try and put it behind you and enjoy the evening. We'll give you lots of hugs tomorrow and Harvey will give you lots of cuddles.xxxx

So sorry to hear this - and that poor Bea is NOT being sensible about his box rest. I don't know what the set up is at your yard, but I've found in the past that the only way I can keep Merlin sane on a longterm period of box rest (it was 8 weeks last time for his fetlock problem) is to fence off a very small (12 X12) piece of grass as near to the yard as possible but not directly next to other horses and put him in there for an hours grazing twice a day while I muck out, make up feeds etc. Admittedly though Merlin is extra greedy so wasn't prepared to waste a second of his precious eating time by running up and down....
Really hope Bea is feeling better soon.

Bea is having limited turnout away from his mates to try and reduce the hoolies. He's more interested in grass than he is in them at the moment LOL. I think he just doesn't like the break in his routine and gets very upset when the others are turned out and he isn't. It doesn't help that one of the yard helpers was in the habit of opening the stable doors and letting the horses out to find their own way to the paddock - I hoped that practice had been stopped though.

I think that will be the best thing for Bea, to allow him some gentle exersise on his own.
How stupid some people are! I know I am guilty of letting my 3 find their own way to the field but I do it for a reason and would never consider doing something like that at a yard where other people's horse's were kept. No doubt Gill will put a stop to this nonsense now.
How is Bea now?

Bea was in good form this evening when I went to put more ice clay on his leg. He got quite excited to see me and yelled his head off! LOL - it's so sweet. I took him for half an hour's in-hand grazing which he seemed to appreciate.
One of the girls is going to pop a bridle on him tomorrow and take him for a walk (no rider though) with one of the other horses who is on gentle walk exercise too. I think he'll enjoy it.
YO is away for a few days, but I'll try lunging him on Friday and see how he looks. If no improvement it'll be nerve blocks and x-rays for the lad. The fetlock is looking less puffy I think - hard to tell though when you see it every day.

Poor Bea. Is it worth having a rope across the inside of the door which you duck under? All horses (bar the stallion and R) on our yard go out and come in by opening stables doors / field gate. Yeti managed 24 hours box rest when he damaged his leg- despite a hole down to the bone and no painkiller he spent the day vertical, kicking and screaming, trying to jump his door and when that failed threw himself on the floor as the vet walked in in a temper tantrum at not going out. For my sanity as much as his we ended up with a 12x12 field. Meanwhile Mickey did 8 weeks box rest and I could muck out with the door open!!!

Thank you for your thoughts.....
Well - tentatively - he seemed much better. YO watched as well and said he was probably 98% sound now - to my eyes he looked fine, but I'm no expert.
So what we've decided to do is keep him on box rest with increasing amounts of time out in the field on his own ( but within sight of other horses so he doesn't fret) for a few more days and see how he goes on the lunge on Wednesday or Thursday. I'll continue the ice-clay and cold hosing treatment for a few more days as well (he's never had such a white sock LOL)
We're going to start him on a joint supplement tomorrow - I got the free 14-day trial sample through the post today - and see if that is beneficial.
Fingers crossed that whatever it was has resolved itself now.....
Trouble is - he's putting on weight standing around in his stable, so the sooner we can get him back in work the better.
