I got down to Jay this morning to find him lying flat out with his head on the floor. He got up when I went into him, but was soon back down again. I called the vet who said he'd come straight out. Meanwhile Jay ended up cast stuck against the wall of his field shelter. He wasn't even trying to get up and had pushed his head and neck right back. I helped him to move his head back round and eventually he started to try to get back up. He was up by the time the vet arrived, but was very lethargic and didn't want to move.
The vet said he's got an impaction, so he's given him some liquid paraffin and painkillers. I've got to report back to him in a few hours to let him know his progress. He's currently out and has started to graze, so luckily he must be starting to feel a bit better.
It was so worrying seeing his stuck on his back against the wall of the field shelter. He looked so helpless and looked as though he was giving up.

He seems a bit brighter now. He's still not passed any motions yet, but hopefully he will soon.

Fingers seriously crossed!!!! Is he moving about for you? You can do big circular tummy rubs to help stimulate the GI. I hope the meds do the trick for him How awful to find him like that! Very scary

Only just seen this. My heart was in my mouth as I read down the post but thank goodness Jay is OK again! What a frightening experience for you.

I'm so relieved. I know he's not completely sorted yet, but at least his bowels seem to be moving now. When i went back out to him after ringiing the vet I really thought i was going to lose him. It was so scary seeing him upside down. He was so lifeless and kept closing his eyes. I hope i never have to see him like that again. The lengths he'll go to to avoid his first 'enlightened equitation' lesson tomorrow hey?

LOL I'm glad you can see a funny side! But it must have been horrible to see him down like that and feel so helpless. They do give us some scares.

We've had such a bad run with the animals lately, I just hope this is the end of it now. We had one of the labs in for an emergency op Christmas day because she cut below her hock, severed the artery and tendon, so needed the tendon repairing. She was doing really well with the original wound healing brilliantly, but a week ago she started to lose the skin off the front of the leg. Apparently she must have damaged the blood vessel supplying that area of skin so it denutrified. Shes got a huge open wound now. Then the springer needed a caesarian with the pups 4 days premature (luckily they're all going strong!). Now Jay today. The vets now know me by my first name!
Jay's back in now and tucked up for the night. He's passed another 'load' too so I'm pleased about that. I think he was confused as to why I'd get so excited over his faeces!

LOL - piles of poo can be so welcome can't they!
What a dreadful scare for you - my tummy was churning as I read your post.... Hope Jay makes a full recovery now. And your lab too - that sounds nasty. Fingers crossed and get well vibes on their way......
