For the last year or so we have been battling to get weight off my Welshie,Lucy. Even when kept on very poor grazing with soaked hay and no feed she stayed very large. After advice from Metabolic horse she was started on Magnesium a week ago...and today we measured her and she has lost 4cm on weigh tape! Nothing else has changed ... She also seems less food obsessed and far calmer, and her coat has brightened up. So it seems that Jackie Taylors suspicions that she may be insulin resistant were correct. I am so relieved. Interestingly she also recommended putting my others on it as well.Betty has stayed the same, suggesting she is ok and the grazing etc has stayed the same. And one of my shetties who has always been a bit round is looking better as well...so chuffed to bits.
Why didnt I try it sooner!

I'm really glad it seems to be working so quickly for Lucy. There is a lot of talk going around at the moment about magnesium supplementation.
Quest has has Lami in the past and blood tests a while ago pointed towards insulin resistance. This year, after talking to Jackie Taylor (thanks to Bellajack who put me onto her) I tried Quest on magnesium oxide. Quest isn't overweight, was calm and looking well beforehand but was suffering from very loose droppings. It didn't seem to make any difference to him and I had a hell of a job getting him to eat anything with the magnesium in, however well I disguised it.
Then, in desperation, I tried him and the others with one of those high magnesium "lami" salt licks which are stupidly expensive and all 3 of mine have gone for these licks in preference to their other salt licks. Quest is still rather "loose" so I don't know what to think.

My trimmer is always extolling the virtues of magnesium as an aid in preventing lami and I have used it on Saturn, although I don't do it regularly enough I suppose. I did try him with the Mag Ox powder and he wouldn't eat his feed!

I still get stressed about putting too much in feed! I'm interested in this but would rather give the ponies something they can choose to have if they want. I used to force-feed Choc garlic and seaweed, now they are in separate buckets she'll have some every now and then, but certainly not every day. D loves peppermint so it'll be interesting to see when she's had enough!

Hi there, glad to hear its making a difference, Ive just started in the last few days giving Magnesiium. Do you give lucy any salt with it? Ive just been advised to feed my horse Sultan magnesium, 2 x 50ml a day by my barefoot trimmer and also to give him up to a desertspoonful of salt with each feed...feels like an awful lot of salt to me? Salt is supposed to be essential to help the body absorb magnesium, and horses dont get it naturally. Id be interested to hear if you feed salt and how much, Ive just been giving a tiny bit.

Hi..I wasnt told about salt but they have salt licks in the field which they all seem to have a go at,so hopefully that will help if they do need it. Luckily mine are so greedy they eat almost anything... She has lost another half centimetre so its still going, whereas Betty,in same field, has put a little a bit on.... Lucy has also lost her serious food obsession. She was getting to be a nightmare as she would weave or pace in her stable if she felt she was being made to wait for her food, and was grabbing at the grass as led in and out of field. Now her manners are back and she is far more chilled.I suppose ,like us,if our glucose levels are all over the place, she just felt ravenous all the time. Whilst I know it wont work for all(Betty is proof...lol) for Lucy it has proved a real life saver. She will be starting gentle work next week again,as my friend who is loaning her cant ride herself due to a back injury taking longer to be treated than we expected,so she has asked a friend to help out. It is a weird texture,a bit like cornflour, but I mix it in their unmollassed sugar beet with their other supplements and then mix that into their Hi-Fi Lite and Hi-Fi Senior mixture. Sorry..rambling a bit,but I am just so chuffed. ;D

I'm glad it is working so well for Lucy. I suppose it does make sense that it could stop the serious food obsession. Maybe I should get my own glucose levels checked - I'm ravenous all the time too!lol
Strangely Quest isn't particularly greedy or food obsessed but does have a very sweet tooth. I tried disguising the magnesium in all sorts including Speedybeet but he turned his nose up at it all. I tried a tiny bit myself and it does have a strange after taste - a bit like how I remember Milk of Magnesia from my distant childhood!

I asked my vet to test Bobs blood for insulin resistance and he said it wouldnt be worth it as he isnt obese??? not sure about that but while I was on holiday he was shod and became very footy afterwards. Not sure if it was lami brought on by concussion or just a bit sore from being shod. He was kept stabled for a week and when he went out for the day I noticed it took a whole 12 hours after being stabled again for his droppings to change colour to dark green. I was thinking that he had a slow metabalism? does that make sense lol! Im going to order more magnesium.
Julie, has epsom salts got a lot of magnesium in it? is that the stuff that fizzes up in water?

Bev - Quest was the same after trimming. I still don't know if he was just feeling a bit of bruising or whether concussion had brought on lami. he is fine again now and I'm only turning him out in hoof boots to protect his soles. Quest is thin now but I'm convinced he has some level of insulin resistance. Such a worry, isn't it?

Yes Pam, I think 90% of my life involves worrying about something to do with Bobs! Thanks for your thoughts though, its good to know someone else is thinking a bit like me lol!

Iv read on the net after doing a bit of research that epsom salts can make the horse loose and also have a bad effect on the lining of the liver if used too often.
