Thanks for the explanation Jane, Sam was a medium weight cob, and is a very laid back pony, but the summer rides ie July/August were always difficult to be honest, I could always get his heart rate down in the cooler weather, I would plan my season of novice rides totally differently on Merls if we ever get there and I would try and get more rides in early spring and late summer.
