Daughter wears a brown/green hacking jacket and canary jods to show her coloured trimmed cob. Yesterday it was suggested to me she would look better in a black jacket. We tend to be in the coloured classes. I always think anything 'native' looks better shown in the more workman like tweeds but in the chaps hand book it says hacking, black or blue jacket. I wonder if anyone has an opinion on the subject? (sorry I cann't resist these smillies!)

I can't think of any occasion where ANYONE would look better in a black jacket unless it is an evening performance and rider is wearing top hat and tails!

I would stick with the tweed as well!
The only time I wear a black jacket is if I am stressaging! And I think the tweed looks much smarter.

So when are black jackets worn? karen - did you wear one in the pairs at Ponies UK or was that blue as well? Or was it because you were riding as a pair with a man?

dressage and jumping mainly penny and men wear them in eve performances.
yes i wore a black jacket at puk as brian was in black and it was a pairs class. if i had been paired with another female then it woulkd have been blue. we had to look as much alike as possible! LOL hes excused for making me wear black as he wore the very jazzy pretty ponies buttonhole i bought him! LOL we didn't get changed for the eve performance, we wore the toppers etc in the actual class itself as it was a conquer d'elegance.

thanks for clarifying Karen. I thought it must be because of Brians colour. The pretty ponies buttonhole suited both of you anyway! by the way, I wasnt picking, I was genuinely curious, as I saw lots of black jackets worn at the NW championships last year!

i know you weren't picking penny you will see a mixture of jackets at some eve performances....blue is correct for a female tho. initially most peeps think black top hat black jacket.....makes sense......matches! but obviously not according to the fashion police of the showing world! LOL no long tails for ladies either!

no long tails for ladies either! I've a friend who does actually wear long tails in evening performances/finals - she wore them at Olympia last year and I don't think she was the only one. I'm not sure if they are navy or black though. I just stick to my navy wool jacket though. I did see a navy topper being advertised and I was tempted but I do like to be different (bottle green hat!)

LOL kermie, theres nothing wrong with a bottle green hat! i used to wear one until i had a drastic wardrobe change! as i said to daleslady, you do see alsorts at eve performances, but the long tails are for men/dressage. the short navy jackets look very elegant on a woman. there was a guy at the chaps nationals wore red tails [huntmaster] riding a red/white cob.......he looked magnificent and WON!

perhaps the accepted evening "wear" is changing slightly in the way that velvet collars on tweeds are now acceptable! LOL soon it will be a competition to see who can stand out the most!
