What a horrific weekend!! On a good note Paul seems to be improving. he has to have x-ray tomorrow as still a shadow on the lung and there are a few other minor problems but generally it seem he will be allowed home and recupperate here... dread to think what that will be like lol.... Curly I am desperately worried about! He has these heart shoes fitted he was in agony! You could see it in his eyes and he became so tucked up, he had his head in a corner and was totally out of it. I could not stand it and phoned the vet who told me to give him extra bute and allow him time to get over the trauma of having these shoes put on that day. I am really worrieed though, last night I honestly would have him PTS becuase he was suffering so much, last night about 3 he fnally layed down and has not got up since. I am pleased he is resting his feet and curly being curly very quickly learnt to tell everyone when he required food, hay or water, all of which has to be within his reach whilst laying down LOL..... I am really worried about ringing vets tomorrow as planned to give update! I know his condition is worsening but I cannot face her telling me yet again we need this conversartion! please dont get me wrong I will never let my boy suffer but does he not deserve more time with these shoes or am I being selfish?

Oh dear, poor lad. He must be in a lot of pain. but I had to smile when he demanded his food be within reach!!
When Prince my shetland was really bad with lami he used to lie down, and stay down, and like you it was a case of carrying the food. But I suppose he was resting his feet, and thats what Curly is doing.
I do think that having the shoes on will have cause him some distress, and you do have to allow for this. Hopefully the extra bute will help. At least he is taking the weight off his feet by lying down, which should help relieve the pain somewhat.
Hope he is feeling brighter in the morning.
Good news about Paul. I am sure he will be pleased to get home.

Oh Tina, my heart goes out to you. I'm desperately hoping Curly will be feeling a little more comfortable this morning now the extra Bute has kicked in. Mair is right, having shoes put on is bound to cause significant distress. Were they nailed on or glued? Quest used to feel pain when having shoes nailed on for at least 9 months after that first bad attack he had and I used to dread the farrier coming and bute him up the day before. Ofcourse, Curly's situation is more serious and I know you wouldn't let him suffer more than he need. I wish there was something I could do to help. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Poor little mite. My stomach flippe doverreading your latest update. It sounds like he is enjoying you being his slave It's years since I had to deal with a laminitic pony, but thankfully we were able to just use pads and bandages until most of the pain had gone. I'm guessing if the shoes were naile don, that woud have sent the pain levels shooting up. Curly is a brave lad and I know he could not be in better hands. I hope the extra bute has started to kick in and at least him lying down will mean his feet getting some rest. Glad to hear Paul is on the mend, it's a bright note for you. Thinking of you today as you speak with the vet

I am sorry to say that Curly lost his fight today.... last night he was in so much pain, the vet came out about 7 and gave him sedation and pain killers, She also pulled off his two front shoes as she thought they were putting to much pressure on his feet. we repeated injections at 9 and again about 12. I went out at 3 in the morning and he was munching hay, standing up like nothing was wrong! At 6 this morning, it was obvious from the tracks in the sand he had been pacing since I had left him... His eyes had sunken and I know it sounds silly but I felt he told me it was time. He laid down about 7, still having me running as he had developed the knack of looking at whatever he wanted, be it hay, water etc and I would simply fetch it for him! I could not leave the water near him as he simply tipped the bucket over and then had wet sand to lay in! I phoned the vet at 8.30 and although it was her day off the receptionist told me she would visit. She came about 10.30 and put my best friend to sleep... I could not see him suffer any more, I love him far too much for that. He had heart rate this morning of 112! RIP my best friend.... Curly is being privately cremated and then I will bury his ashes in the corner of his paddock.

Oh Tina. I am so very, very sorry. Take comfort from the fact that you did everything and you both fought together. Nothing I can say will be any help and words are just not enough. No more pain for Curly though, he is comfy now.
Gentle hugs to you xx
