I thought it would be a good idea to have a record of these early stages of backing, so I can look back like I do with Cherry! Remy is such a laid back girly most of the time, although she CAN be very sharp and spooky . Lipizzaners are generally very sharp horses so it will be interesting to see how she progresses under saddle and whether she keeps the laid back-ness!! My mounting block is an upturned water tank, very handy height for me ;D What are you doing up there mum? What a good girly! I'm trying to train her to put her head down in response to a touch on the face and the command 'down' as she is sooo upheaded - she picked it up in seconds!

That's brilliant Gill, she doesn't look worried at all!!
Just a thought - could we put this thread in the Youngsters bit? and maybe any future backing threads you do? It would be a useful topic for all sorts of people.

Well maybe I shouldn't have said how sharp Lipizzaners are LOL, she was whizzing around on the lunge today like a bat out of hell and throwing in more than a few bronco moves!! However she hasn't really been able to run around while she's in, that plus the conditioning feed I've been giving her probably went to her head ;D. Once the grass comes through and the ground dries up a bit then she can go back onto the field and I can cut down on the hard stuff!

She seems such a good girl for you Gill, I am having the dentist out to all mine next week and once Digga has been checked I am going to start to back him, so will be looking in on this thread, maybe I should start one for Digga and we can compare notes.

She does look totally unfazed Lol at your mounting block. I would need a step just to get up on that

Lol at your mounting block. I would need a step just to get up on that I'd never get near her back without it Helen! I am only 5'3" and she is 15.2hh ... I also like them high as I don't like to pull on the saddle when I mount. I'm working her with a bit and establishing the 'whoa'! She was very good today, listened to everything and did as she was asked (stopping every time I said whoa, unlike yesterday ). She has picked up the head dropping but is rather enthusiastic about it, as every time I go near her she drops her head ;D ;D. It's worked brilliantly though for getting her headcollar and bridle on!

That's a very good idea for getting her bridle and halter on And she's such a good girl!!!! I love seeing the pics of her now. Her eyes have changed so much from when she first came. It won't be long and you'll be realizing your dream of riding your own Lippizaner
