Danny has laminitis, vet says its very mild but definately lami. Good news is that it was caught really quickly, only just raised digital pulse and warm feet all because the person who was supposed to bring him in mid-morning on thursday 'forgot'!!!!!! and he was still out at 3pm when i luckily got back from work 2 hrs early. He also had steriod injection 2 weeks ago wich may have added to it. His crest had increased by 2" since the previous evening when I turned him out and was rocksolid.I kept him in for 48hrs and althought loads better I still wasn't happy with him yesterday so called the vet. he had a fynadine injection as is on 2 bute a day for a week with his sawdust bed covering the floor and rationed soaked hay. He is one grumpy Dales pony already!
Im just keeping my fingers crossed that it hasn't done too much damage and needless to say will definately only be relying on myself in future but am kicking myself for not bringing him in myself even it was really early.
Please all keep a really close eye on yours as the vet said she has had 6 cases in 2 days, 2 of which were TBs.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to Danny and to you - I know how awful it is.

Oh no!!!!! Isn't it frightening how quickly it can happen and seemingly so out of the blue! I think, when they've had it before, the slightest thing can just tip them over back into lami. At least you caught it early and hopefully he will make a swift recovery.
I'm worrying like crazy over Quest and am keeping him in for the moment too.

Sorry to hear that Kristy, but as you say lucky it was caught early. I hope that Danny recovers quickly.
It's my constant worry, Dan is often a bit unlevel and I always tend to put it down to his injury, but may be overlooking something vital! I think I will get the vet in to double check just in case.

I do so hope he is recovering well. I am stressing about it at the momment as the spring grass is coming through with avengence here! It is so nice to have them out all day but not at any cost!

Poor Danny- hope he improves quickly. Out of interest, how much grass do you have? Mickey's paddock is virtually bare- 3 have shared a small paddock this winter out during the day and in at night so it's been well grazed but doesnt seem to be growing. Even our rested half is nowhere near what you'd expect which is worrying as there seems to be an awful lot of lammi at the mo.

I know Emily! We are the same, our paddock is relatively bare looking and the grass isn't growing that much due to the dryness and yet there is a lot of lami round here too. Such a worry!

I hope he recovers quickly, it's a worry. We've not much grass at the moment- I'm relying on round bales of hay so that seems to be less of a worry. I'm dreading them going to the summer field in May though.

Oh no! Im sorry to hear this Kristy. Thank god you caught it early, I think once they have had it you see the signs quicker which is a good thing. Its such a bloomin awful thing, I really wanted to do some hard swearing then! I hope he is ok soon. What is fynadine? not heard of that before? It could be the steroid injection that tipped him over the edge rather than too much grass. Our grass isnt growing much at the moment but Im just dreading the rain we are supposed to be having this week. I might have to keep Bobs in too. The good news is the yard owner has split the gelding field into 3, Im so relieved for that at least!

Bev - I think Fynadine is another anti-inflammatory like Bute. The first time Quest had Laminitis he got no pain relief at all from Bute so the vet changed him to Fynadine and that helped him tremendously. At the tiem, the laminitis Clinic said Fynadine doesn't help Lami horses but it certainly made a difference to Quest.

Finadyne is a general anti-inflamatory and pain killer, so it will offer relief to lami's. Because it's injected, it gets to work quicker.
Do hope Danny gets better soon - thank goodness you noticed it so quickly as well.
If the rain comes the grass is just going to shoot away.

Vets just had another look at Danny when she was hear for a livery and is really pleased at the progress. Still a slight pulse and heat though even on 2 bute a day so he has to stay in his box for at least a fortnight.

Oh Kristy I was just so down reading that Danny has lami. Why do wonderful horses get it and the nasty rotten ones seem to stay well, it's just not fair at all. So happy to read your last post that you did catch it so quickly & he's responding well. Hugs for both of you & healing vibes for Danny. It is walking such a tightrope with our lami prone ones. Well done on catching it so quickly.
I hadn't hear of that anti-inflamatory over here. Must try to find out the chemical name & see if we have it. Bute doesn't seem to help Topaz much either so maybe this would be an alternative for her.
